What Kind of Domains Should Be Used for a PBN?
Before I answer that question let me first just take a moment to explain what I mean by a PBN. This stands for Private Blog Network and it is a collection of websites that you own and control which you use for your own purposes to build links to your money sites.
The value of a PBN for SEO purposes is two fold:
1) You control the content that you publish to these websites. That means that you can create posts that are relevant to your money site which is very important to SEO these days. Also, you control the anchor text of your links which is one of the most important ranking factors.
2) The domains on which you build these sites are highly powerful in the eyes of Google (or at least they should be if you get the right ones!) which means that not only are you sending relevant links, but they are powerful links. It is this power which moves websites up in the rankings.
So with that out of the way, let us look at what kind of domains we can use to build out our PBN sites.
1) Web 2.0 Platforms
By web 2.0's I mean sites like Blogger, Wordpress, Tumblr, Weebly, Live Journal etc. There are hundreds of these sites where you can go and build a blog absolutely free!
There are two main advantages to going this route. The first is of course the cost - they are free and you don't have to pay for hosting. The second is that the sites on which you create these blogs usually have very high domain authority which can give them a boost. Tumblr for instance has a DA of 97!
However the big downside is that these sites you create will have 0 page authority. As a result you will need a LOT more of them to be effective than the other types I will explain in a moment. Also, another downside is that you don't control these domains - they could be taken down at any time and there's nothing you'd be able to do about that.
2) Expired Domains
These are domains that were once owned by somebody and then expired. They are now released back into the domain pool for anyone to register. These are very cheap as all you have to pay is the cost of the domain registration and then the hosting fee which you can buy from as little as $1 a month these days if you want to.
The trouble is, that many of these expired domains have been used for shady purposes in the past and actually carry a Google penalty. If you happen to use a penalised site inadvertently for your PBN, you could pass that penalty onto your money site!
3) Auction Domains
These are similar to expired domains except that they are one stage before in the process. When the domain is about to expire, it will be auctioned off for a few days and if not bought at auction it will be released back into the domain pool and be available to anyone (see 2, above).
Auction domains are generally higher quality than expired - simply because expired domains are the ones that nobody wanted to bid on at auction. They tend to have the best metrics, the best backlinks and carry the most trust. That's the upside. But of course the downside is the cost!
You can get an auction domain for as little as $12 but they can go for hundreds or even thousands of dollars depending on their strength.
Depending on your project then, I would suggest you rank these in reverse order. Auction domains are the strongest, followed by expired domains and then lastly, web 2.0's.
